In the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 53 verse 5, it is written:

But He was pierced for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him,
and by His stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:5 (Bible – BSB)

Prophet Isaiah in relation to Jesus Christ

The writer is called Isaiah. He was a prophet who lived before the birth of Jesus. Jesus said that the prophets wrote about him:

Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.”

Luke 24:44 (Bible – BSB)

Isaiah 53:5 in relation to Jesus Christ

Isaiah 53:5 is about someone being punished for our transgressions and iniquities, which results in peace and healing for us.

The death of Jesus Christ on the cross was a punishment for our sin (evil deeds) in the sight of God. Jesus – being innocent – died on behalf of the guilty. Jesus’ death brings peace between God and sinners, because through the blood of Jesus there is justified forgiveness for every sinner that believes in Jesus.

Peter, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, also wrote about the relationship between Isaiah 53:5 and Jesus Christ:

He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. “By His stripes you are healed.”

1 Peter 2:24 (Bible – BSB)

When you read the entire 53rd chapter of Isaiah, you will see what an accurate description of Jesus it is.

When was Isaiah written?

Isaiah is believed to have been written in the 8th century B.C. (before Christ).

So there was time enough for the scroll to be copied and spread around by the time Jesus was born. Jesus himself gave a reading from the scroll of Isaiah in a synagogue in front of attendants (see Luke 4:14-21).

For those wanting more information about when Isaiah was written, you can research the Dead Sea Scrolls, which also contain the scroll of Isaiah. The Dead Sea Scrolls were scrolls found between 1947 and 1956 in eleven caves near Khirbet Qumran (located on the shores of the Dead Sea). The scrolls are more than 2,000 years old and date from before the birth of Jesus.

What should I do with this?

The prophets wrote about Jesus before he was born, so that there would be enough evidence for you to believe in Jesus.

You have done evil in your life, and so have I. Our consciences testify against us. These mistakes separate us from a holy and perfect God, and you risk an eternity without God. The blood of Jesus – the Son of God – can wash away your sins if you believe in Jesus. So that after your body dies, you are prepared for an eternity with a perfect, infinitely wise, holy, righteous and loving God.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

When you believe in Jesus, your next steps are to find a group of believers to grow together (a church), get baptized, read the word of God – the Bible (it’s easier to start reading in the New Testament part of the Bible) and obey what you read to grow in love.
